The primary concern on most people's minds when they're selecting a new city to move to isn't necessarily how much the homes are or how much there is to do on the weekend. No, most people are thinking: how easy will it be for me to get a job with a manufacturer of wire rope sheaves or a hospital or an elementary school? If work is your primary concern, when you're doing your research into Austin, Texas, make sure to take a look at the city's top employers, because chances are you'll end up working for one of them. Each one employs over 5,000 people.
Education
The number one employer in the city of Austin is the Austin Independent School District. They don't just hire teachers, either. Though many of their employees will teach kindergarten through 12th grade, there are also administrators, support workers, and aides. If your training equips you more toward studying the long term effects of boiler water treatment chemicals on the environment, you might find a place at Austin's 10th and 11th largest employers: Texas State University San Marcos and the University of Texas at Austin.
Government
Government jobs are the creme de la creme of employment positions, because government workers get better severance, retirement, vacation, and sick leave than mortgage lenders or TV repairmen or anyone else. If you're an American citizen you can apply. Your best chance of finding a position is with the City of Austin, the city's second largest employer. However, the federal government is close behind at number four and the state of Texas is number 9.
Technology
This is the boom industry for many cities, Austin included, so if you have experience designing or working with high temperature insulation or computer parts, you might have a chance at a job in one of Austin's largest technology employers. Dell Incorporated, the computer manufacturer, is number three on the list, while Freescale Semiconductors and the IBM company are numbers five and six.
Health Care
Another industry that is growing along with the population and cannot be outsourced is health care. There's got to be somebody nearby to repair the damage a tube cutter can do to a human in an accident. If you're a doctor, nurse, health support worker, lab technician, or orderly, you might have a shot at a job with Austin's 7th and 8th largest employers: the St. David's Healthcare Partnership and the Seton Healthcare Network.
